CHICAGO (AP) — Mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel is promising Chicago Public School students their school day will be getting longer.
Speaking Friday at a South Side charter school, Emanuel said how much more teachers will be paid due to the longer work day is up to negotiation. But there won’t be any discussion on whether children will get more instruction.
Emanuel also said if the school day grows from five hours, 45 minutes to six hours, 45 minutes, it doesn’t mean teachers’ pay will equal the increase.
Emanuel has complained Chicago students get far less instruction than those in Houston, Los Angeles or Boston.
Chicago Teachers Union spokeswoman Liz Brown notes Chicago requires 946 instructional hours a year, which is slightly more than New York City and slightly less than Los Angeles.
