Chicago police to add more officers to streets

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago’s interim police superintendent is putting more officers onto city streets ahead of spring break and warmer weather. Interim Superintendent Terry Hillard made the announcement Friday. Hillard replaced Jody Weis, who stepped down from the top post earlier this month. The department plans to shift more than 70 officers from special assignments into uniformed duties. Also, nearly 400 tactical assignment officers will return to uniform for greater police visibility and to help patrols. Hillard said Chicago’s various communities can help police in fighting crime by keeping the department informed of any illegal activity. Copyright 2011 The Associated Press.
