CHICAGO (AP) — A police officer shot and killed last year has been honored by Chicago Mayor Richard Daley and the city’s police department. The badge of Officer Thomas Wortham IV was added Tuesday to the Police Superintendent’s Honored Star Case at the department’s headquarters. Wortham was killed when he tried to stop a group of men from stealing his motorcycle. His is the 478th Honored Star. The department has been honoring fallen officers by adding their star badges to the memorial for more than 100 years. Daley says Wortham was "an exceptional police officer and an exceptional young man." The mayor says the city must honor Wortham’s memory by drawing on his strength, his sense of commitment and his love of his home town to defeat violence. Copyright 2011 The Associated Press.
