CHICAGO (AP) — A Chicago hospital is taking part in a large, international study of aspirin use in older adults. Rush University Medical Center is one of several sites for the National Institute on Aging study. Researchers hope to determine if the benefits of aspirin outweigh the risks in healthy older people. It’s known that aspirin prevents heart attacks and strokes in people with established heart disease. But it’s still unclear whether its benefits for healthy people outweigh the risks, such as bleeding. The study will enroll 6,500 healthy people, age 70 and older, in the United States. Another 12,500 will participate in Australia. All participants will be randomly assigned to take either a low dose aspirin or a dummy pill daily for roughly five years.
