The Chicago Defender proudly announces Applause!, a special commemorative publication celebrating 25 Standout Black Non-Profit Leaders who are making an extraordinary difference across Chicago and the Chicagoland area. Nominated by the community, these leaders and their organizations were chosen because of their relentless dedication, impact, and commitment to uplifting those who need it most.
Scheduled for release on September 30, 2025, this inaugural edition will shine a powerful spotlight on individuals and organizations that are too often overlooked—those who work quietly, yet tirelessly, on the front lines to care for our neighborhoods, advocate for justice, and build stronger communities for all.
“This is about celebrating those who are often too busy serving others to receive recognition themselves,” said Dyanna Knight Lewis, Publisher of the Chicago Defender. “These leaders embody selflessness, resilience, and a deep commitment to making Chicago stronger. Their work is proof that one person, or one organization, can change the lives of many.”
The Applause! project is not just about recognition—it’s also about building community pride and support. Non-profit organizations, businesses, and community members have the unique opportunity to be part of this historic moment by placing congratulatory ads, purchasing sponsorships, or showcasing their own organizations alongside this prestigious inaugural class. Doing so provides visibility, celebrates service, and demonstrates a shared commitment to the betterment of Chicago and the Chicagoland area.
Now is the time for the community to rally behind these honorees. By supporting Applause!, you are directly uplifting leaders who are helping to feed families, shelter the unhoused, educate youth, advocate for justice, and provide critical resources to thousands across the region.
