CLARINDA, Iowa (AP) — Police have identified an 11-year-old Chicago boy who drowned in the Nodaway River in southwest Iowa. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says Deontae Haynes died Tuesday night after being pulled into an undertow while swimming with several others. Authorities say Haynes was recovered from the river in 27 feet of water. He was later pronounced dead at a hospital in Clarinda. Sixteen-year-old Tamra Haley of Clarinda tried to save Haynes before ingesting water. Haley was taken to a local hospital before being transferred to a facility in Omaha.
