There was a time when you had to be up at 3 am before you were bombarded with ads for get-rich quick schemes. Call now and get a DVD that will show you how to make millions, buy a book from a man wearing a blazer covered in question marks and get free money from the government. The list was endless. But the newest ad clamoring for your attention on the airwaves seems too good to be true. Simply send away old and useless gold in your house to a broker and get tons of cash back in only 48 hours. You don’t have to have a PhD in economics, but only a basic knowledge of history to recognize that this new gold rush phenomenon is a telltale sign that it is the worst time to sell. A fool and his gold are soon parted and unfortunately many in our nation are turning into fools in this rough economy.

For the uninitiated, or those who haven’t looked at television in the last year, there is a new gold rush on. Commercials are running telling people to exchange their gold for cash, and pawn shops are reporting record exchanges of gold and silver. Apparently we are a nation of golddiggers. Tupperware parties of the 1980s, Mary Kay parties of the 1990s and Passion Parties of the 2000s have been replaced by “Gold Parties” today. Franchises like MYGOLD party LLC are booming as suburbanites buy the right to hold gold parties where friends, coworkers and neighbors come over, have their jewelry appraised and leave with a check or cash. The gold rush doesn’t stop there though. With gold selling at almost $900 an ounce, those who don’t have an old class ring in their sock drawer to sell are out looking for gold. The Gold Prospectors Association of America’s membership jumped 20% in the last year as hunting for gold in the rivers and desserts has evolved from an eccentric hobby to a potential profit-making venture.
