SAPULPA, Okla. (AP) — The FBI has been called in to help investigate the burning of a cross outside a black church in Creek County.
A motorist who saw the cross on the front lawn of St. John’s Baptist Church late Thursday reported it to the Sheriff’s Office on Friday. A deputy who responded to the scene found a partially burned cross leaning against a chain-link fence.
Investigators also found partially burned rags, a piece of burned plastic and other debris.
Sheriff’s Lt. Charles Redfern says at least two people have been questioned about the burning, but he didn’t identify them.
Redfern also said the church previously had been vandalized when its kitchen was broken into and vandals threw flour and sugar around the room.
Church officials haven’t commented on the incident. Copyright 2011 The Associated Press.
