Braun releases tax returns

Chicago mayoral candidate Carol Moseley Braun releases her income tax returns one day after saying she didn’t want to.

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago mayoral candidate Carol Moseley Braun releases her income tax returns one day after saying she didn’t want to. Braun’s 2009 returns show she had a total income of just less than $16,000 that year. The former U.S. senator runs an organic food company. Her income taxes became an issue when she told reporters Monday she wouldn’t release returns before the Feb. 22 election because "I don’t want to." Braun said Tuesday she regretted her remarks because they sent the wrong message. Campaign spokeswoman Renee Ferguson downplayed the issue Tuesday and said Braun had always planned to release the returns if she made it to the April runoff. But she went ahead and did it earlier when her staff told her her statements were causing a "firestorm." Copyright 2011 The Associated Press.
