Blago status hearing set for Thursday

CHICAGO (AP) — The federal judge who will preside over former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s corruption retrial could rule on several motions at a pretrial status hearing. Thursday’s hearing in Chicago comes less than a week before the impeached governor’s second trial is set to begin. It also comes a day after Blagojevich seemed to throw down the gauntlet by accusing prosecutors of pretrial maneuvering to prevent his lawyers from proving his innocence. He singled out a motion filed by the governor earlier this week. Blagojevich says prosecutors are trying to stop his attorneys from pursuing lines of questioning that could be crucial to his defense. The U.S. Attorney’s office on Wednesday declined comment. Blagojevich faces 20 charges, including that he sought to sell or trade President Barack Obama’s vacated U.S. Senate seat.
