CHICAGO (AP) — Gov. Pat Quinn will join Chicago Mayor Richard Daley and the family of a slain police officer in signing new gun legislation. The bill will increase penalties for unlawful firearm possession. Quinn is scheduled to sign the legislation Monday at a park on Chicago’s South Side. Daley, Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez and Sheriff Tom Dart are slated to attend the bill-signing, in addition to the family of Officer Thomas Wortham IV. The 30-year-old officer was shot and killed outside his parent’s home on May 19 by men who were trying to steal his motorcycle. Wortham, a member of the Wisconsin National Guard, had recently returned from a tour of duty in Iraq. Two other Chicago police officers have been shot and killed since his death.
