A Chicago man who tried to pay an undercover police officer to murder his former wife has been denied bond. Police say 41-year-old John Johnson told a friend he would be willing to pay up to $3,000 for his ex-wife’s murder. The DuPage County Sheriff’s office then set up an undercover operation where Johnson attempted to pay an undercover deputy for the hit. State Attorney Joe Birkett said he was pleased that Johnson was not able to "reach through the bars at the County jail and take the life of his former wife." When he was charged, Johnson was in DuPage County jail for allegedly violating a protection order that his wife had against him. If convicted, Johnson could face as long as thirty years in prison. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
