A spokesman for the Chicago Public Schools says authorities are expected to announce next month plans to close or consolidate at least 20 schools next school year. That’s up from 18 last year. School system spokesman David Pickens says eight to 12 struggling schools, including at least two high schools, probably will be targeted for closing based on poor academic performance. Pickens says other schools face closing, consolidation or phaseout because they are at least half-empty. About 90 schools are at least half-empty, but Pickens says factors beyond the occupancy figure are taken into account before closing a school. He says the school-closing list will probably be released in the second week of January, after every target school has been visited. AP ______ Copyright 2008 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
